For those interested in finding out more about California archaeology the place to look is the Society for California Archaeology's website (www.scahome.org). They publish a newsletter and a proceedings series and have lots of links for archaeology in the Golden State. The "SCA" annual meetings are always lots of fun. Archaeology and historic preservation issues in California are overseen by the State's Office of Historic Preservation (http://ohp.parks.ca.gov). This site has a ton of information-from listings of California Landmarks to downloadable forms for recording your own sites. Interested in historical archaeology? Check out the website of the Society for Historical Archaeology (www.sha.org). More interested in prehistoric research? The Society for American Archaeology tends toward precontact Native American studies (www.saa.org). Warning: "SAA" material is pretty heavy going and intended primarily for professionals. Speaking of professionals, you might want to look at the website of the Register of Professional Archaeologists (www.rpanet.org). This is the national organization that upholds standards and ethics in archaeology. The Archaeological Institute of America is oriented more towards the general public. Their site has lots of news and interesting links (www.archaeological.org). Additional current archaeological news is available from the National Geographic website (http://nationalgeographic.com/news/archaeology). If you prefer archaeological news in video form, The Archaeology Channel should be to your liking (www.archaeologychannel.org). Finally, we love where we are located! To find out more about what's going on in Pioneertown, check out Joe DeMarco's website for our village (www.pioneertown.com). |
